The Rapid Eye Movement

When you sleep, you fight cancer and dementia, fight off colds and flu, lower the risks of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes, boost your memory and make yourself more creative and look better, keep yourself slim and reduce your food cravings, make yourself happier, less depressed and less anxious.

Sleep is widely recognized as essential for health and performance, yet 60% of Germans sleep less than they actually need. The issue is not a lack of knowledge but a lack of priority. In a society driven by productivity, sleep is often sacrificed for work, exercise, or screen time. While fitness and nutrition enjoy strong cultural relevance and positive public perception, sleep rarely receives the same attention.

The Rapid Eye Movement challenges this imbalance. Rather than educating people about sleep, the project focuses on changing attitudes. By borrowing visual codes from sports and lifestyle culture, it deliberately breaks away from conventional sleep imagery of starry skies and bedtime romanticism. The result is a new visual language that positions sleep as an active foundation for performance, wellbeing, and everyday life.

The project was developed as a social movement with a distinct visual identity, combining bold imagery, reduced typography, and a community-driven approach. Launched through guerrilla interventions in public space and extended through posters, social media, and merchandise, The Rapid Eye Movement reimagines sleep as something visible, desirable, and worth prioritizing.

"Too little sleep makes us fat, stupid and ill. And also makes us die earlier. This statement [...] has been proven by hundreds of studies."
